Nokia demonstrated wireless communication of the future

Nokia продемонстрировала беспроводную связь будущего

Now less and less often in news columns the name of the legendary manufacturer of mobile phones from Finland Nokia is found. But, to the greatest joy of the fans of this company, its engineers continue to work on making modern technologies even more advanced. A vivid example of one such project is the fifth-generation ultra-fast mobile network, capable of transmitting data at speeds up to 10 Gbps (1.25 GB / s).

Nokia demonstrated a new generation of mobile communication in the framework of the summit dedicated to 5G-technology, held annually in Brooklyn. For the transmission of data, the frequency of millimeter waves at 73 GHz was used. Also in the project, a 2 × 2 MIMO configuration, a Null Cyclic Prefix modulation and a frame size of 100 microseconds were used. About the distance at which the data was transmitted, the organizers for some reason kept silence. Nokia's management claims that such a data transfer technology is able to work without reducing the speed of connection, regardless of the number of simultaneously connected users.

"At Nokia we strive to expand human potential and unite the whole world with a single network. Mobile 5G networks, capable of transmitting data at speeds up to 10 Gbps with very low latencies, are the driving force for the development of the entire mobile industry as a whole. We were glad to demonstrate our developments to the public and share them with our partners. This demonstration only underlines the fact that Nokia occupies a leading position in the 5G area, "said Lauri Oksanen, vice president of the Finnish company for research and technology.

It is important to note that existing mobile networks currently operate in the range from 800 MHz to 2.6 GHz, so increasing this frequency to 73 GHz seems quite a serious jerk. Nevertheless, it should be borne in mind that the low frequency of the signal is much better than obstacles in its way in the form of the same walls of buildings. It seems that Nokia is silent about the fact that for the organization of such productive networks, cellular operators will have to place antennas much closer to each other, otherwise users of the network will constantly lose the signal in the walls.

Nokia is not the only company that develops 5G networks. Samsung not so long ago demonstrated its own technology for wireless data transmission. South Korean engineers were able to transmit data at the rate of 1.2 Gbit per second at a frequency of 28 GHz during the test. The transmitter was located inside the moving car. And in the fixed position, the transmission speed increased to 7.5 Gbit / s.
