Only recently we talked with you that smartphones are quite capable of causing a person's death, and then there was another problem related to them, which drew attention of doctors.
For diseases associated with modern digital technologies, a new word appeared in English - digitillnesses ("digital diseases"). A new disease, which was revealed by Dr. Kenneth Hansraj, doctor of the New York Center for Spinal Surgery, has already been categorized in narrow circles as a "text neck" or "telephone pressure" (telepressure).
The reason for this common new disease is our habit of keeping the smartphone well below the level of our eyes, which is why many of us spend two to four hours a day in a very unnatural position, tilting our head down.
"The more we tilt our head forward and down, the stronger the load on the spine. With an inclination of 15 degrees, the load on the spine is slightly more than 12 kilograms, with an inclination of 45 degrees - already 22 kilograms, and with an inclination of 60 degrees - as much as 27 kilograms. "
This is a much greater burden than the one that a person experiences in his normal poses standing upright or sitting with a straight back. Given that people spend a lot of time every day, reading and responding to text messages or just flipping through the latest news on their smartphone's screens, a very sad picture of what is happening is emerging.
"Together we spend in this unnatural posture from 700 to 1400 hours per year, which leads to overload of the cervical spine, which, in turn, entails numerous deviations in human health. For example, it is much more quickly overworked, does not sleep well, and also much, much more. "
The new disease was
Dr. Hansraj himself understands perfectly well that it is impossible in our time to completely avoid new technologies or completely abandon them, but people should do their best to reduce the burden on their spine. To do this, follow a few simple tips.
Try to keep your smartphone as high as possible and as close to your eyes as possible. Also, as often as possible, tilt your head down when you want to read or write a response to a text message. This will reduce the strain on your spine and eventually allow you to avoid unpleasant diseases in the future.
