First look at the MegaDisk cloud service from MegaFon

МегаДиск

Yesterday, the Russian mobile operator Megafon officially announced the launch of its own “cloud” storage. The service was named “MegaDisk” and provides users with 10 GB of beta for storing files completely free of charge, according to a press release from the company.

Since the “cloud” services are now more than enough, I first took this news very skeptically. Nevertheless, I could not miss the opportunity to try it in action and immediately downloaded applications of the same name for iOS and OS X. Should I move from the cozy Dropbox or Yandex.Disk for it? Now we find out.

The first minus of the service (the most obvious one) - “MegaDisk” is available only for MegaFon subscribers. To log into the application, logins and passwords from the “Service Guide” personal account are used. Therefore, subscribers of MTS and Beeline, to put it mildly, fly by.

The second obvious disadvantage is the price. The aforementioned 10 GB is not considered a special bounty by MegaFon when Google Drive provides 15 GB of free space. In addition, gift gigabytes are valid for two years - then you have to pay. And here the most interesting begins.

After the test period is completed, the user will be offered only two free gigabytes. If the subscriber suddenly exceeds the allowed limit, he will pay 30 kopecks per day for each additional gigabyte, and the “expansion” of the storage will begin automatically. Of course, in the future, customers will be able to purchase individual packages of 50 GB and 100 GB, but the price for them has not yet been reported.

This whole story has one plus: downloading files to MegaDisk via the mobile Internet will not be charged while in the home region. True, again after the end of the test period.

What about applications? It should be noted, in this regard, they tried in MegaFon: the service is available on three mobile platforms at once (iOS, Android and Windows Phone), and also has a desktop client for Mac computers. The program for iPhone supports automatic uploading of photos to the “cloud”.

That’s just to see this download I, apparently, was not destined. After the first launch of the application, it started downloading all of my film, but it “flew out” in just a couple of seconds. Repeated launches did not lead to anything - the number of photos available for downloading (which, of course, did not decrease) was displayed on the icon, and the program itself constantly generated an authorization error.

I tried to reinstall the application several times, but the picture has not changed for a day and a half. By the way, on OS X Mavericks, MegaDisk also behaves unstably.

As you already understood, competition with Dropbox or other services here does not smell. One can only guess for what purpose MegaFon launched a project that already has high-quality and worthy counterparts on the market.
