Sony skillfully turned the smartphone into a tablet

Sony Xperia Z Ultra

What if you remove a cellular module from a huge phone? That's right, you get a compact tablet. This is exactly what Sony has done with its Xperia Z Ultra, which in the coming days will begin to be sold in the Wi-Fi version.

The Xperia Z Ultra Phablet, introduced in the first half of last year, really looks more like a tablet than a smartphone. Its 6.44-inch display is only slightly inferior to 7-inch tablets - perhaps the most popular form factor for this class of devices. At the same time, the size and weight of the Z Ultra did not change: 179 x 92 x 6.5 millimeters and 212 grams.

In addition to the cellular module, all the components of the device remained in place: the same 4-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor with a clock frequency of 2.2 GHz, 2 GB of RAM, support for Bluetooth 4.0, microSD and an 8-megapixel camera dressed in a waterproof metal case . Yes, the internal memory of the device has been increased from 16 to 32 GB.

The new tablet - that's what Sony calls this device in its press release - is running the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean operating system.

In Japan, the new Xperia Z Ultra will go on sale on January 24 for about $ 500, which is slightly more expensive than similar tablets of competing brands. Nothing is known about the availability of the tablet in the rest of the world.

In this simple way, Sony has shown how easily the line between a smartphone and a tablet computer is easily erased.
