Sony is developing a top-end phone based on Firefox OS, Computerworld writes, citing a statement from the Mozilla management team. Optimism Mozilla is shared by Sony, LG, ZTE, Huawei and Alcatel, which develop Firefox smartphones. 18 telecom operators have already expressed their desire to sell devices managed by the new operating system.

The support provided by the Californian company at the initial stage gave it confidence that Firefox OS has all the necessary prerequisites to become the third operating system on the smartphone market after iOS and Android.

Google also positions Android as an open source mobile platform. However, it is not. According to Gong, the behind-the-scenes life of the operating system is hidden from the eyes of telecommunications companies and hardware manufacturers. They are allowed to make changes to the new version of Android only after its release.

However, analysts doubt that Firefox can seriously change the situation on the market. Too late, they say. At the same time, other open source mobile operating systems, such as Ubuntu and Tizen, continue to fight for a place in the sun, despite expert forecasts.

Gong is confident that the success of Firefox will largely depend on the support of partners. The advantage of the operating system is the HTML5 language, convenient for writing web applications. Moreover, the first Firefox phones will enter the market with a competitive price.

Nobody believed in us from the very beginning of the project. Who needs the third operating system? To business. We said we would do it. And they reached out to us, ”summed up Gong.
