Samsung has announced that it has begun mass production of 4-Gbps LPDDR3 RAM chips for mobile devices. This means that it is quite possible that the next generation of flagship tablets and smartphones will get much faster RAM than they do now.

“As a company that has the ability to provide the most efficient, fast mobile memory chips, we are starting to supply OEMs to manufacturers so that they can bring even more innovation to their new products,” said Jung-Young June Jun.

"Our four-gigabit mobile DRAM chips of class 20 nm are another example of the fact that the company is able to provide our customers with high-quality and high-performance memory on time."

The new 4-gigabit LPDDR3 memory chips are capable of processing up to 2133 megabits of information per contact per second, which is more than twice as high in performance as the mobile LPDDR2 chips operating at 800 Mbps. This will allow a device operating on the basis of such chips to transfer, for example, three films in Full HD-resolution with a total volume of 17 GB in just a second.

LPDDR3 memory chips based on the 20-nm process technology will perfectly cope with Full HD-video on smartphones with a screen size of five inches and higher. New chips offer a more than 30 percent performance boost and are 20 percent more energy efficient than 30 nm LPDDR3 DRAM chips.

Of course, sooner or later, Samsung itself announces the first device that will use the new 4-gigabit LPDDR3 chips, but when this happens, nobody knows yet. Maybe the new Galaxy Note 3 phablet can boast of such?
