Nikon plans to enter the smartphone market

The Japanese company Nikon is considering the possibility of entering the smartphone market due to a stronger drop in the profitability of the compact camera business than previously predicted. In April-May, sales of compact cameras with an integrated lens fell by about a quarter compared with last year, according to a business publication Bloomberg, citing the words of President Nikon Makoto Kimura.

According to IDC, a US research company, shipments of smartphones rose 46 percent last year, reaching 722 million units.

“The number of people filming smartphones on the camera continues to grow. We have focused on the cameras, but we can change course, ”said Kimura.

In the first quarter, the company received a low profit. However, Nikon does not disclose quarterly forecasts, and management refuses to comment on this.

According to President Nikon, the company is currently working on products that will appear on the consumer market over the next five years, and maybe earlier:

We want to release a product that will change the image of the cameras. This may be another category of consumer goods. The fast-growing mobile market is changing the business environment. We need to respond to these changes.

Nikon also plans to expand the production of medical devices, which will increase the company's revenues within three years, Kimura said.

Meanwhile, the current mobile device manufacturers are already equipping smart phones with powerful cameras and adding “mind” to their compact cameras, as South Korean company Samsung is doing. Nokia, in turn, is preparing for sales a revolutionary 41-megapixel camera phone Lumia 1020 with LED and Xenon flashes.
