Inspired by the X-Men: LG introduced the curved G Flex smartphone

LG G Flex

After a series of leaks, South Korean LG Electronics officially unveiled a curved screen smartphone. G Flex is another attempt by the company to bypass its largest competitor in the face of Samsung Electronics.

G Flex uses a curved horizontal axis OLED 720p display with a diagonal of 6 inches, a 4-core Snapdragon 800 processor with a clock frequency of 2.26 GHz, 2 GB RAM, a 13-megapixel camera and a 3500 mAh battery, reports TheVerge, quoting LG's official press release.

The weight of the smartphone is only 177 grams, and the thickness of the body in different places varies from 7.9 to 8.7 millimeters. G Flex uses a curved battery. Previously, the company reported on the development of several new types of batteries for smartphones and other mobile devices.

If Samsung uses the new form factor to realize the Galaxy Round user interface capabilities, LG focuses on the ergonomics of the G Flex, calling it “the world's first true curved smartphone.” The new phone repeats the shape of the face and offers a more immersive video viewing.

The most unexpected feature of the LG G Flex was the "self-healing" function of the case, which LG compares to Wolverine from the fantastic action movie "X-Men". On the back of the smartphone case there is a special coating that supposedly removes scratches within a few minutes after damage. However, it will be possible to verify this only when G Flex goes on sale.

In South Korea, LG G Flex sales start in November. The smartphone will be offered through three local telecom operators.

Curved and flexible displays create a new segment in the high-tech smartphone market. But despite the improved ergonomics, they still offer an insufficient number of functions for which it would be worthwhile to buy non-standard-shaped smartphones. Difficulties add high costs of production, analysts say.

In the near future, LG plans to increase advertising costs in order to increase brand awareness in the high-end smartphone market.

American Apple, which is rumored to be developing an irregular shape smart watch, is also planning to enter the market of curved consumer electronics.
