Project Tango: 5 Things You Need to Know About Google's New Project

Project Tango

Google wants to release a new generation smartphone that can see the environment the way you see it. Among other things, the device can help blind users navigate the surrounding space. This is not a new version of Android, but a completely new product. Google calls it Project Tango.

The goal of the project is to teach mobile devices to perceive the surrounding space and movement, said Project Director Tango, Johnny Lee.

Below are 5 things you need to know about Google’s new project.

Project Tango is a 5 inch smartphone

Project Tango intends to unite the physical and virtual worlds. The interaction of people with the outside world occurs through visual signals. Google is developing a prototype smartphone with similar features.

According to Lee, the current prototype is represented by a 5-inch phone with special hardware and software capable of tracking the movement of the device in three-dimensional space, while creating a map of its environment. Built-in sensors record more than 250,000 measurements per second, updating the position and orientation of the phone in real time. Based on the data obtained, a model of the surrounding space is built.

Project Tango is not Android, but uses it in its work.

The Project Tango prototype runs on the Android operating system base and offers application programming interfaces that help Android applications in Java, C / C ++ and the Unity Game Engine in studying the position, orientation and depth of the phone in space. Journalists resource ReadWrite contacted Google to find out the technical characteristics of the device, in particular its processor, but have not yet received a response.

Project Tango can revolutionize augmented reality navigation software and applications.

A phone capable of creating 3D models of the nearest environment can be widely used. For example, with its help Google can create more detailed maps inside the premises of large stores. The project can accelerate the development of applications and augmented reality video games, where digital information is superimposed on top of the real world image.

Project Tango offers a limited number of developer kits.

Today, Google offers only 200 prototypes for developers. Distribution of sets will be held on March 14. You can apply here .

However, not all kits provide the same development tools. According to Google, some prototypes are optimized, for example, for creating maps inside rooms, others for processing data collected from sensors. Devices can be used for different tasks, including the development of multiplayer games.

Project Tango has 16 partners

Companies such as Movidius (a Silicon Valley start-up company engaged in developing chips for processing data from sensors and cameras), OmniVision, Open Source Robotics Foundation and Bosch are taking part in the project. The latter, by the way, decided to come to grips with the Internet of things. For this purpose, even a separate company was established.
