Japanese Nintendo, specializing in gaming consoles and video games, is considering a "new business structure", which among other things involves the development and production of smart devices, reports Bloomberg news agency, quoting the words of the company president Satoru Iwata.

This news was preceded by the presentation of loss statements that have plagued Nintendo for three years in a row. The company lowered its sales forecast for the Wii U game console from 9 to 2.8 million copies. It also reduced its expectations for the 3DS portable console from 18 to 13.5 million units. At the same time, Iwata does not plan any personnel changes in Nintendo, at least in the short term.

We are thinking about a new business structure. Due to the wide distribution of smart devices, we naturally explore their perspectives in the gaming business. It's not as easy as, for example, transferring the game "Mario" to smartphones, - said Mr. Iwata.

In recent years, Nintendo has faced stiff competition from mobile platforms. Research firm App Annie revealed that users began to play more on smartphones and tablets running the iOS and Android operating systems, rather than acquire specialized portable devices. Mac Rumors notes that in the past, Iwata was unflattering about Apple products, calling her “the enemy of the future” and stating that he would never allow other platforms to use Nintendo resources.

But investors were right and once called on Nintendo to switch to developing games for iOS and other mobile platforms as soon as they saw a decline in demand for 3DS. Some of them offered Nintendo to enter the smartphone market by buying a technology company or developing a new mobile platform. Iwata’s recent comments indicate that Nintendo’s intentions are serious about the smartphone market.
