The production of expensive and clever smartphones are engaged in huge corporations. But today at the Mobile World Congress exhibition, Mozilla announced its plans to release a budget smartphone model for only $ 25.
The non-profit organization Mozilla Foundation was created specifically to guide the Mozilla project of the same name, which includes the Netscape Navigator, Mozilla Application Framework and other developments. But in our country, the company is known, first of all, for its popular free browser Mozilla Firefox, which gained people's love and confidently occupies the first lines of charts around the world (in Russia, for example, it takes the second place after Chrome).
Since Mozilla is an organization that does not have the right to engage in commercial activities, its role in this case will be limited to installing certain specifications and providing its mobile operating system to hardware developers, i.e. directly smartphones themselves.
According to the CNET information portal, Mozilla has already entered into a partnership agreement with the Chinese microchip manufacturer Spreadtrum Communications, which agreed to supply the first smartphone models to markets in different countries.
"We are working together with Chinese partners to lower the price of smartphones below the $ 50 barrier, which was not such an easy task," said Brendan Eyck, head of technology at Mozilla, in an interview.
These phones will not be like what we are all used to. They will be much smaller than the average smartphones of our time, will have a battery of less capacity, as well as screens of lower resolution than the one we are used to.
Nevertheless, in countries where people cannot afford to pay 200-500 dollars for a smartphone, phones with Firefox OS on board at a ridiculous price of $ 25 can be extremely popular.
