AUO introduced a 5.7-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 2560 x 1440

AU Optronics (AUO) has announced a 5.7-inch AMOLED display with 2560 x 1440 pixels - the highest resolution for this type of products. Obviously, soon such screens will become a new benchmark for future smartphones.

Immediately worth noting that this is not the first panel with this resolution (LG Display and Japan Display have already demonstrated prototypes of 1440p LCD screens), but the first AMOLED panel, ready for production. The advantages of AMOLED over LCD are obvious - it's a sharper image, more saturated colors and lower power consumption, which helps extend battery life.

According to AU Optronics, the thickness of the new screen is only 0.57 millimeters, which is half that of the recently announced 5.5-inch 1440p screen from Japan Display. With this resolution, the density of the AU Optronics panel pixels reaches 513ppi, and the In-Cell Touch technology used provides the best screen sensitivity. In addition, the company said that it developed a "non-amold" 6-inch display with the same characteristics.

Interestingly, the AU Optronics press release also talks about the company's desire to produce screens for smart watches. In support of this, a reference is made to the 1.6-inch AMOLED, which is still in development. An example of the use of such screens in wearable devices are the Samsung Galaxy Gear smart watch.

It should be noted that AU Optronics, like LG Display and Japan Display, is working behind the scenes and is not looking for fame. In the past, this company supplied panels for Apple and collaborated with Sony on some OLED TVs.

It is expected that the so-called Quad HD-screens will gain popularity in the second half of this year. The next Quad-HD phone after Oppo Find 7 could be LG G3, whose debut, according to rumors, will take place in May. Unfortunately, AU Optronics did not say when its new AMOLED panel will appear in smartphones.
